Along with Franz Liszt, Theodor Leschetizky (born Łancut, Poland 1830; died Dresden, Germany 1915) is recognised as having been the most successful and influential piano teacher of all time. Both of them had been pupils in Vienna of Carl Czerny, who was, in turn, a pupil of Beethoven. Leschetizky thus had a significant musical link with the past and this gave his teaching a special status. Amongst his best-known pupils were his second wife, Annette Essipoff, Ignace Jan Paderewski, Ossip Gabrilowitsch, Artur Schnabel, Ignaz Friedman and Benno Moiseiwitsch, all of whom were internationally acclaimed virtuosos.
